Metopa che parola strana. Come sempre deriva dal greco e letteralmente significa spazio che si trova nel mezzo. A farla breve, si tratta di decorazioni che nel nostro Duomo sono proprio lassù, in alto, vicino alle travi di copertura. In cima al nostro Duomo risiedono le cosiddette "figure antipodali" realizzate, così si narra, dal Maestro delle metope nel 1130 a.C.. Uno dei dilemmi della Chiesa era allora quello della salvezza: essa sarebbe stata per tutti, anche per coloro che stavano agli antipodi, lontani dal centro nevralgico della cristianità oppure no? Nelle cosiddette mappa mundi, ad esempio la mappa di Ebstorf (1276-1283) si vedono all’estremità creature deformi, mostri, figure bizzarre. Che ci fanno nel Duomo di Modena? Se ci pensate il Duomo si presenta proprio come una mappa mundi….ed ecco perché ai suoi antipodi, lassù, ci sono proprio figure mostruose. Alcune di queste figure sono davvero una sorpresa e a decodificarle ci aiuta la lettura di Chiara Frugoni. C’è la donna con tre braccia, l’ermafrodito e l’ittiofago, ovvero il mangiatore di pesce crudo (che ci sarà di strano direte voi ); ci sono poi la sirena, la gigantessa e l’uomo dai lunghi capelli. Infine ci sono gli antipodi….ovviamente a testa in giù!
Resta un dubbio… i mostri si salveranno oppure no?

It has been pass down that they were realized by Metopes’ Master in 1130 bc. In the so-called mappa mundi (world maps) Ebstorf map (1276-1283), just to give you an example, is possible to recognised misshapen beings, monsters, weird characters. What are they doing in Modena cathedral? Our cathedral would be considered as a mappa mundi indeed...this is the reason why on the upper level, above everything, monsters stay. Among them it is possible to find real surprises and Mrs Chiara Frugoni has helped us to decode them. A three-arm woman, an hermaphrodite, an ictiophager, the raw fish eater (no longer weird from our point of view), as well as a mermaid, a giant woman and a long-hair man. In conclusion, the antipodes also...upside-down!
